Final Prep Underway for Multi-Diameter Pipeline in North America

Final tests are currently underway at Dexon HQ for a major inspection.

The pipeline will require our tool to navigate a tricky multi-diameter line and cover over 40 km.

What Is on the Bench?

The UT-MC Ring is one of our premier ultrasonic systems and will be inspecting this line.

The tool is purpose-built for detecting metal loss.

The UT-MC Ring works its inspection magic via a ring (hence its name) of tightly packed transducers, delivering up to 1,000,000 direct wall thickness measurements per m².

What We Are Checking

Odometers
These tiny wheels have huge consequences. Odometers are typically attached to the end of the pig and track the tool’s position through the line.

Analysts use this information to pair defect data to specific locations.

If odometers slip up, operators could end up wasting money on misplaced verification digs or discarding the data.

The updated design features spaced-out odometers to improve accuracy and reduce drag interference.

Multi-Diameter Transition
This line jumps up 4” and back again. Multi-diameter lines are nothing new in the inspection world, but the double 4” transition is an unusual challenge.

To test it properly, we installed custom-fabricated spools into our closed-circuit pipeline.

The pipeline allows engineers to run the tool repeatedly in conditions similar to those on-site, ensuring that the tool will operate as promised.

Our Ring handled the transitions like a pro.

What Is Next?

We are nearly ready to ship the tool. Once the data analysis team signs off, the tool is getting packed and shipped across the Pacific.

When it lands, our inspectors will be ready—with a field-tested, dialed-in tool tailored for the job.

Stay tuned.
