Earlier this month, Dexon’s headquarters hosted their quadrennial blood drive.

This round saw 39 employees donate, with the volume totaling 15,600mL (equal to 39 units of blood).

A big thank you to everyone who joined and helped us reach 15L!

Blood Shortage in Thailand

Having a thick needle stuck into your veins and 400mL drained from your body while staring at the ceiling is not exactly fun. Donors endure the pain for the pleasure of knowing that they might have saved a life with just 30 minutes of their time and a bag of red blood cells.

Unfortunately, too few in Thailand are willing to put up with the discomfort. The need for blood has remained at critically low levels for years.

Last November, the Thai Red Cross National Blood Center reported that hospitals had a daily demand of 7,305 units while only 3,237 units were available—a shortage of over 50%. This New Years, hospitals in Northeastern Thailand reported shortages as high as 80%.

The lack of blood is particularly troubling for Europeans. Rh-negative blood, common among Caucasians, is extremely rare in Asia. Numerous patients—expats and tourists—have died in the emergency room waiting for transfusions that never came.

Dexon Pulls Its Weight

Dexon has been doing its part to alleviate the ongoing shortages. The company has been hosting blood drives for 3 years, collecting hundreds of liters and saving numerous lives. This includes blood from European staff, some of whom carry Rh-negative blood.

Dexon is proud of all staff who joined in this term’s blood drive, and we encourage everyone elibigble —employee or not—to make donating a habit.

You never know when you might be the one in the emergency room desperate for a transfusion.
