Inspecting a vessel that has been in service for decades takes two things: 1) the ability to physically reach the areas that need inspecting and 2) a method that lets everyone involved judge the condition of the structure clearly — because ship inspections often require collaboration between inspection teams & regulators.
Dexon Technology combined rope access with remote visual inspection (RVI) on a structural inspection of a 30-year-old US-flagged vessel.
The combination allowed the classification society surveyor to view conditions on site through a camera, alongside Dexon's engineering team, without personally entering the confined space.
The challenge: reaching the structure — and letting the surveyor see it without anyone dangling off a rope
A vessel over 30 years old needed its structure inspected, and a surveyor from the classification society had to see the condition of that steel firsthand before signing anything off against the applicable requirements.
That set two problems at once: get the engineering team to the inspection points, and get the surveyor a clear enough view of what they found there — without the surveyor having to rope down or fold into a confined space to get it.
The solution: rope access combined with camera-based inspection.
Inspectors used two techniques together to connect the work inside the vessel with the classification society's inspection.
1) Rope access
The engineering team used rope access techniques to reach the vessel's structure and carry out the inspection work.
2) Remote visual inspection
Cameras, carried by Dexon’s inspectors, allowed the surveyor to see the condition of the structure in the required without having to enter the confined space in person.
Working the two techniques together made access and visibility part of a single inspection process, and supported coordination between the engineering team and the surveyor.
Result: inspection delivered, remote assessment supported
Dexon delivered the structural inspection of the 30-year-old US-flagged vessel by applying rope access together with remote visual inspection—and allowed the vessel to complete its inspection and continue its work confident in its integrity.
