Overview
Key challenge:
Inspect a 49 km crude oil pipeline containing a large 16-in. to 20-in. diameter transition without risking tool instability, loss of sealing, or stuck pigs.
Project Details
• Length: 49 km
• Diameter: 16-in. × 20-in. multi-diameter
• Type: Crude oil transmission pipeline
• Inspection Medium: Crude oil
• Location: Onshore
• Continent: North America
• Tool: Customized multi-diameter inspection tool
Challenges & Solutions
Challenge 1:
• Large diameter transitions increased the risk of stuck tools, unstable sealing pressure, and unreliable tool centering
Solution:
• Designed custom guiding and sealing discs capable of flexing through the 16-in. to 20-in. transition while maintaining tool stability and centering
• Reduced the risk of excessive friction, unstable passage, and off-center inspection data
Challenge 2:
• Multi-diameter transitions created a risk of distorted or unusable inspection data due to unstable tool movement
Solution:
• Performed multiple qualification runs in Dexon’s multi-diameter test loop using simulated defects
• Verified tool stability, passage reliability, and inspection accuracy under representative operating conditions prior to deployment
Conclusion
Dexon Technology successfully completed the inspection of the 49 km multi-diameter crude oil pipeline, achieving smooth tool passage and reliable inspection coverage across the diameter transition.
