What is the Difference Between Push-Through and Closed-Loop Testing for In-line Inspection (ILI) Tools? 

Before an in-line inspection (ILI) tool is deployed, it needs to be tested to ensure that it can pass the pipeline’s geometry and deliver clear data. 

Two commonly used methods—push-through testing and closed-loop testing—serve very different purposes. 

Push-Through Testing 

Push-through testing focuses on mechanical performance under forward pressure. 

In this setup, the tool is pushed through a pipeline test string using external force, typically water, oil, or gas.  

This method allows engineers to evaluate: 
Passage through tight tolerances and restrictions 
Tool flexibility in bends and diameter changes 
Friction, drag, and overall mechanical robustness 

Push-through testing is particularly useful for complex pipelines geometries or for new tool designs that require more thorough verification of navigability before proceeding to closed-loop testing.

Closed-Loop Testing 

Closed-loop testing is designed to replicate real operating conditions. 

Here, the tool is driven by fluid through a continuous pipeline loop, simulating actual inspection runs.  

This method enables evaluation of: 
Data quality and signal stability under flow 
Tool velocity effects on resolution 
Detection and sizing performance (POD, POS) using known defects 

Closed-loop testing is critical for validating whether the tool can deliver accurate, reliable inspection data—and particularly ensure that navigating a difficult feature in a pipeline is not a matter of luck.

Why It Matters 

The distinction is simple but important: 

Push-through = mechanical feasibility
