Multi-Diameter 8-in. & 10-in. – Refined Product Transmission Pipelines

Dexon was tasked with inspecting two transmission pipelines transporting diesel and gasoline from a refinery to a tank terminal in the Caribbean. The key challenge was to inspect both pipelines efficiently while minimizing preparation time, avoiding unnecessary launcher fabrication, and overcoming a T-junction configuration.

Overview

Key challenge:
Inspect 8-in. and 10-in. refined product pipelines connected through a T-junction while minimizing mobilization costs and overcoming product recovery constraints during inspection.

Project Details
Length: 5 km & 300 m
Diameter: 8-in. & 10-in.
Type: Refined product transmission pipelines
Inspection Medium: Diesel & gasoline
Location: Onshore
Continent: South America
Tools: UT-MC Falcon & UT-R Owl

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1:
Different pipeline diameters required separate launcher configurations and inspection tools

Solution:
Designed and fabricated a bespoke multi-diameter launcher with a removable transition section reducing the launcher from 10-in. to 8-in.
Enabled deployment of both the UT-MC Falcon and UT-R Owl from a single launcher system
Reduced fabrication cost, preparation time, and operational complexity

Challenge 2:
No receiving tanks available to collect displaced product during inspection operations

Solution:
Implemented a temporary recovery and recirculation system using rented trucks and pump stations
Modified the UT-R Owl for bidirectional operation, allowing the tool to return to the launcher location after reaching the T-junction

Conclusion

Dexon successfully inspected both refined product pipelines and delivered accurate metal loss and geometry data to the operator.

Through the use of a bespoke launcher design, temporary recirculation system, and bidirectional inspection approach, Dexon minimized operational complexity while providing reliable integrity data to support future maintenance planning.
